Cara Berhemat Selama Kuliah di Luar Negeri

Melbourne, 16 Agustus 2014.

Sebagai mahasiswa asing di luar negeri, saya merasa bahwa kemampuan mengatur keuangan sangatlah penting.

Sebagai penerima beasiswa, kita akan mendapatkan living allowance  (LA) baik itu diberikan secara monthly ataupun setiap 3 bulan sekali seperti yang saya dapat dari LPDP. Kisaran LA sebenarnya sudah ditetapkan berdasarkan standard cost of living di negara masing masing. Namun, bagi yang tidak terbiasa mengatur uang, kecenderungan ‘kebocoran’ bisa saja terjadi. Karena setiap tempat berbeda-beda kondisi, jangankan beda negara, yang satu negara pun masih bisa berbeda dari satu kota dengan kota lainnya.

Karena posisi saya di Melbourne, Australia, saya akan share mengenai cara saya berhemat dalam menggunakan LA di Melbourne. Pertama saya ceritakan kondisi saya dulu, saya orangtua tunggal, punya seorang anak kelas 3 SD dan sekarang statusnya fulltime student alias jobless..haha. Jadi LA yang saya dapatkan itu harus cukup untuk makan, akomodasi, transport, telp, listrik, air, internet, kirim living allowance untuk anak  dan jalan-jalan (yang ini kudu..wajib..prinsip..haha). Nah loh..banyak kan. Untuk yang kondisinya harus berhemat (seperti saya) berikut tips2nya :

1.Biaya akomodasi

Di Melbourne biaya akomodasi adalah biaya yang paling tinggi. Apartemen di CBD (Central Business District) sewanya sekitar 900 sd 1300 aud (standard room). Nah, untuk berhemat caranya cari kamar-kamar kos sewaan yang letaknya agak menjauh dari CBD, seperti yang saya tempati. Sewanya sekitar 600-750 aud dan all included(listrik, air, telp dan internet). Namun perlu juga dicermati, bahwa tinggal di suburb artinya kita harus keluar biaya transportasi, Kalau saya rata-rata mengeluarkan 135 aud per bulan, ditambah 600 aud biaya kos, totalnya 735 aud. Masih bisa berhemat hampir 100-200 aud perbulannya. Rumah kos saya jaraknya 20 menit naik tram ke kampus.

2. Biaya transportasi

Ini juga mahal di Melbourne. Yarra tram, bus ataupun train semua menggunakan kartu  (disebut myki card) dengan sistem pembayaran yang sama. Kita bisa pilih, jika jadwal keluar rumah tidak sering atau tidak setiap hari, bisa beli yang daily (myki money) dengan harga 7,16 aud per hari. Namun jika frekuensi naik kendaraan umumnya mancapai lebih dari 4 hari per minggu, lebih baik membeli yang monthy (myki pass), yaitu dengan harga 132 aud untuk 30 hari sehingga biaya hariannya bisa turun sekitar 5 aud per hari. Kalau jarak tempat tinggal masih memungkin, bersepeda bisa lebih menghemat lagi. Sekalian berolahraga. Harga sepeda baru yang standar sekitar  130 sampai 200 aud. Bersepeda di Melbourne itu enak sekali. Jalannya besar dan ada jalur khusus sepeda jadi kita tidak perlu khawatir terserempet kendaraan. Jika kita bersepeda, maka bisa menghemat hingga 100 aud perbulan. Jumlah yang cukup lumayan untuk dimasukkan kedalam piggy bank.

3. Biaya makan.

Ini nih yang saya paling suka..haha. Karena saya suka masak jadi saya bisa banyak berhemat. Namun walaupun tidak suka memasak saya tetap sarankan untuk memasak jika ingin berhemat. Biaya makan di luar paling murah 6 aud per sekali makan, artinya 18 aud perhari. Coba bayangkan jika harus mengeluarkan 18×30 hari =  540 aud! Sementara jika masak sendiri, biaya belanja groceries bisa di tekan hingga paling banyak 50 aud per minggu, sehingga pengeluaran hanya sekitar 250 aud perbulan.  Dengan pengeluaran segitu, kita sudah dijamin kecukupan gizi haha..karena bisa beli semuanya dari sampai buah-buahan. Dari sini kita bisa berhemat sedikitnya 200 aud.

4. Biaya Telp

Buat yang harus berkomunikasi secara rutin dengan keluarga di rumah, biaya telpon bisa menjadi kendala. Seperti saya contohnya yang harus mengecek keadaan anak dan berkomunikasi hampir setiap hari. Tapi Alhamdulillah, sekarang ada internet yang bisa membuat dunia semakin kecil dengan biaya murah. Hahaha,…saya pakai internet (yang sudah termasuk di biaya sewa kosan) untuk berkomunikasi. Bisa menggunakan applikasi whatsapp, line ataupun skype. Biaya telpon selular berlangganan rutin perbulan hanya sekitar 35an aud. Bisa digunakan untuk saat-saat urgent atau untuk komunikasi lokal.

5. Berwisata

Jalan-jalan itu rutinitas yang penting buat saya. Karena bisa menghilangkan kejenuhan akibat terlalu banyak membaca jurnal..hehehe. Senangnya, mahasiswa (termasuk internasional) sering mendapatkan concession (tunjangan atau potongan harga ) untuk memasuki tempat-tempat wisata. Kita juga bisa membuat Culture Card, yaitu kartu yang di khusus kan bagi mahasiswa internasional agar mendapatkan potongan harga di tempat-tempat wisata.  Kartu tersebut bisa dibuat di student service di kampus masing-masing. Atau alternative lainnya yang tidak kalah seru adalah pergi ke pantai atau taman (yang ini gratis). Untuk tempat-tempat wisata yang berbayar bisa juga dengan ikut group wisata dari kampus yang sering diadakan oleh perkumpulan. Karena biayanya lebih murah daripada pergi perorangan atau kelompok kecil.

 

Nah, dengan perhematan-penghematan tersebut, saya berhasil menyisihkan LA dari pemerintah untuk biaya sekolah dan hidup anak dirumah, beli tiket untuk pulang ke rumah setiap 2 atau 3 bulan sekali dan masih bisa juga jalan-jalan di tempat wisata di Melbourne.

Eeemmmmm…saya kasih pics masakan saya ya..hehe. Biar tau kalau masak sendiri itu berarti kita bisa yakin dengan kehalalannya dan tetap merasakan masakan khas lidah Indonesia:P

Summer, Autumn dan Winter (begini toh rasanya)

Lahir dan tinggal di negara tropis lebih dari 30 tahun. Sebelumnya yang saya tau hanya hujan dan panas. Ini kali pertama tinggal di negara ya memiliki 4 musim dan sekarang sedang musim dingin alias winter.

Pertama kali saya datang ke Australia pada bulan February, saat itu summer sudah hampir selesai dan autumn sudah mulai terasa. Saat peralihan summer ke autumn, suhu mulai sejuk tapi belum stabil.Kadang panas dan kadang sejuk, suhu berkisar antara 15-20 derajat celcius.

Pada bulan maret dan april udara semakin sejuk. Terutama pada malam dan pagi hari, suhu bisa mencapai 10 derajat celcius. Kadang hujan gerimis datang, dan daun-daunpun bertambah hijau dan bunga-bunga bermekaran. Untuk pertama kalinya saya mengalami ‘daylight savings’ yaitu pada saat waktu dimajukan 1 jam untuk menyingkat waktu siang yang secara alami lebih panjang dari malam pada saat summer (memasuki autumn).

Pada bulan mei, autumn sedang tepat pada waktunya. Daun-daun yang tadinya berwarna hijau berubah manjadi oranye, coklat dan merah. Terlihat sangat indah. Daun warna warni mulai satu demi satu berguguran di jalan. It was so pretty.

Memasuki bulan juni, hujan semakin sering turun dan udara semakin dingin. Suhu pagi hari bisa mencapai 5 derajat celcius. Pohon- pohon sudah mulai gundul.

Bulan juli saya pulang ke Indonesia karena liburan akhir semester. Ketika kembali ke Australia di akhir Juli, sedang winter dan suhu rata-rata dibawah 5 derajat celcius. Kadang-kadang bisa mencapai minus derajat. Hujan turun setip hari dan salju tipis atau kerikil es turun dengan singkat dibeberapa tempat.

Warna hijau dan oranye di pohon-pohon sudah jarang terlihat karena pohonya banyak yang botak. Hehe..nanti saya upload foto-fotonya ya supaya bisa lihat.

Road to Melbourne Part 1

Ketika itu lulus pun belum dari jenjang S1 di Universitas Negeri Jakarta namun pikiranku sudah berkelana jauh ke sekolah pasca sarjana. Dan cita-citaku hanya satu, yaitu mendapatkan beasiswa untuk kuliah S2 ku. Bertemu dengan seorang lelaki yang sebenarnya aku belum kenal cukup dalam, namun karena aku bukan tipe yang suka berpacaran maka aku memutuskan untuk menikah. Saat itu, hampir mendekati sidang skripsi, aku  hamil. Berkonsentrasi belajar ketika hamil ternyata tidak mudah. Terlebih triwulan pertama aku sering mual-mual dan tidak nyaman beraktifitas. Akhirnya sidang skripsi pun tertunda satu semester. Setelah lulus, cita cita melanjutkan kuliah itu tidak pernah hilang dari pikiranku. Namun kenyataan hidup membuatku harus bekerja dan mengurus putri kecilku sehingga waktu dan dana pun tidak ada yang tersisa. Namun keinginan itu tetap saja ada dihatiku.

Tips : Jika kita memiliki cita-cita, jangan menyerah karena keadaan. Katakan terus didalam hati, bahwa kita pasti akan mampu meraihnya

Dalam beberapa tahun aku mencoba menyisihkan sedikit..demi sedikit sisa uang. Sampai akhirnya pada awal tahun 2013, ketika putriku sudah cukup besar kurasa, aku pun memantapkan niat untuk mengejar cita-citaku.Akses menuju beasiswa belum ketemu. Dana pas-pasan hanya cukup hingga semester 2, maka aku harus tetap bekerja sambil kuliah dan mengurus anakku. Sebenarnya, jurusan yang tersedia tidak ada yang memenuhi keinginanku namun aku tetap berniat untuk bergerak. Beberapa bulan pertama di kampus tersebut aku sangat senang, kembali kepada sesuatu yang sangat aku gemari, yaitu belajar.

Tips 2 : Passion is the key to success. Ikuti kata hatimu. Lakukan apa yang bisa kamu nikmati

Suatu hari pada semester pertama perkuliahan di sekolah pasca sarjana tersebut, aku datang terlambat. Memasuki kelas aku memilih untuk duduk di kursi belakang. Dosen yang aku lihat didepan itu rasanya aku tidak kenal, namun aku segera berusaha berkonsentrasi kepada apa yang sedang beliau katakan. Sambil mengatakan “beasiswa”, beliau menuliskan sebuah website di papan tulis. Aku sangat ingat apa yang beliau tulis, http://www.lpdp.depkeu.go.id .. aku mencatatnya dibuku catatanku. Tidak lama setelah itu dosen pengganti tersebut keluar kelas. Namun aku akan selalu ingat wajahnya. Dialah yang menunjukkan jalan menuju cita-citaku. Orang yang belum pernah aku liat sebelumnya. Orang yang bahkan namanya pun aku belum sempat bertanya. Seorang dosen pengganti yang aku temui tanpa sengaja.

Tips 3 : Jangan menunggu, siapkan dirimu mulai saat ini juga. Kesempatan akan datang pada saat yang tidak terduga

Setibanya dirumah aku mencoba mengakses web tersebut. Rasanya beasiswa yang ditawarkan ini persyaratannya sanggup aku penuhi. Saat itu juga aku memulai mempersiapkan dokumen persyaratan. Yang terberat adalah ketika tes TOEFL ITP yang berbarengan dengan puasa ramadhan. Jarak lokasi tes dari rumahku cukup jauh, diakses menggunakan kendaraan umum dan dalam kondisi puasa. Namun aku berniat untuk tetap tes. Hasil tes keluar dan nilaiku memenuhi syarat min pendaftaran. Maka hanya dalam waktu tidak lebih dari 1 minggu, aku sudah submit seluruh aplikasi dan persyaratannya. Lalu sambil menunggu, aku melanjutkan kuliahku yang memasuki tengah semester pertama.

Sebentar saja, mungkin hanya 2 mingguan sejak aku submit aplikasi aku, namaku tercantum pada daftar yang lolos seleksi administrasi. Sungguh sebuah hadiah indah dari Allah. Aku menari-nari bergandengan tangan dengan Sofie, putri cantikku.

Tips 4 : Have faith in yourself. Be confident of who you are.

Proses selanjutnya adalah wawancara. Ini adalah momen yang paliiiiiing menegangkan aku rasa. Beberapa hari menjelang wawancara, aku sudah mempersiapkan pakaian apa yang hendak aku pakai. Lalu aku mencari tau, pertanyaan apa saja yang biasanya ditanyakan pada saat wawancara beasiswa, dll. Namun ketika aku berada di lokasi wawancara tersebut, perasaanku sangat-sangat tegang. Memutar otak untuk menenangkan diri, aku menelpon kedua orang tuaku setiap 15 menit untuk memberikan laporan keadaan..hehehe…

Aku dapat giliran terakhir, setelah lebih dari 3 jam menunggu. Ketegangan itu lama kelamaan hilang sendiri. Hingga tiba saatnya aku dipanggil ke ruang wawancara, sepertinya aku sudah lebih rilex.

Ada 3 orang reviewer dihadapanku. Walaupun kembali tegang namun aku tidak lupa menjabat tangan dan mengucap salam. Lalu aku diminta untuk memperkenalkan diri, Reviewer pertama yang pertanyaannya begitu memojokkan dan seakan memberi kesan bahwa aku tidak ada harapan untuk lolos. Lalu ada reviewer kedua yang banyak bertanya tentang bidang ku dan penelitianku. Setiap kali aku menjawab pertanyaan, reviewer pertama selalu ikut menimpali, atau memberikan pertanyaan follow up dari reviewer kedua. Reviewer ketiga aku rasa sibuk memperhatikan cara ku duduk, caraku menjawab pertanyaan dan gerak gerik aku saat menjawab pertanyaan. Karena aku tau aku sedang dinilai secara keseluruhan , maka walaupun dengan dahi yang lembab karena berkeringat, aku berusaha untuk selalu menjaga kontak mata selama komunikasi berlangsung.

Tips 5 : Be Brave and The World Will Be Yours

Selesai wawancara rasanya lega. Selesai sudah ketegangannya.

Sejujurnya, aku tidak deg-degan sama sekali mengenai hasil wawancaraku. Aku sudah

melakukan apa yang bisa aku lakukan. Berserah diri kepada Allah yang Maha Kuasa.

Karena kuliahku sudah berjalan ke bulan ketiga, aku pun kembali kepada kegiatan sebelumnya.

Alhamdulillah, hanya seminggu setelah wawancara, hasil tes diumumkan dan aku termasuk salah satu dari mereka yang lolos. Ini bukan main senangnya. Hampir tidak percaya sebenarnya sih. Aku belum pernah mencoba melamar beasiswa sebelumnya, dan ini pertama kalinya melamar. Tanpa pengalaman, tanpa bimbingan, aku hanya bermodalkan semangat dan trust kepada diri sendiri.

Kuliah di sekolah pasca sarjana ku yang berada pada bulan ketigapun aku lepaskan. Waah..senangnya, karena sebenarnya jurusannya juga bukan jurusan yang aku incar. Dan selebihnya aku juga merasa sangat tertantang untuk bisa diterima di University of Melbourne, Universitas dengan peringkat 31 dunia versi QS tahun 2013. Dan peringkat ke -6 dunia pada jurusan yang aku minati yaitu Applied Linguistics!

Blended Learning, What and Why?

BLENDED LEARNING

            Technology has become something inseparable from Education in this era. It gives more varieties of learning and serves the needs of modern people.  The term ‘e-learning’ refers to the new methods of learning which enable students to learn in long distance by using internet. Henderson (2003) states that e-learning is learning at a distance that uses computer technology (usually the internet).  On the other hand, the existence of teacher and human interaction (face – to – face ) also play an important role in the nature of learning.  Therefore, by combining the benefits of e-learning and traditional learning, then, a new method termed “blended learning” was introduced. Hopper (2003) states that blended or mixed classes have been proved to be more effective than full on-line classes   or full face to face classes because they give effective collaboration between technology and human interactions. However, in the application of blended learning, some difficulties occur due to readiness of human resources (teachers) and the limited ages of students who are suitable to the method of blended learning.

One of the most common problems in accordance to the application of blended learning is regarding human resource. In this discussion, human resource refers to teachers or whoever conduct blended learning in their teaching programs.  Firstly, many teachers are lack of literacy in technology.  The trends show that students’ nowadays are more literate in technology than their teachers. However, in applying blended learning, teachers’ literacy in technology is expected to be more competent than the students. Otherwise, they will not be able to help students who consult them in it’s operation.    Secondly,  in order to create blended learning program, teachers should master the skills of choosing  effective, appropriate and beneficial teaching materials taken from the internet such as videos, e-news, e-mails, games, articles, journals, magazines,etc, all in the latest versions available.  Hartoyo (2012) adds that teachers can also master the content management systems such as Blackboard, Drupal or Moodle. Those of which are still unfamiliar for many teachers.  Thirdly, teachers often do not have enough time to cope with the workloads. Conducting a blended learning program means that the teacher should rebuild the program rather than just adding some internet related tasks, or something else. In the process of learning, teachers should always be available to meet students’ needs. Hartoyo (2012) states that teachers and students may use chat room to discuss difficulties. Thus learning process is not limited by school periods. In reality, however, we may find it difficult to be done due to teachers limited time outside school hours.

The second primary problem in applying blended learning is in the factor of the learners. Blended learning is suitable for independent, responsible, consistent and well-managed students. It means that only adults can meet the criteria. Students’ maturity and responsibilities play important roles in the success of blended learning programs. With this limit, blended learning seems to be less applicable for education in general. Tabor (2007) mentioned that students’ learning maturity and readiness for blended learning with it’s demand for independent learning must be considered.

In conclusion, we can say that blended learning can be used as an alternative in learning and it is beneficial in answering the needs of modern people. However, some disadvantages of  blended learning happen to be the obstacles in applying it. The solution is on the hands of the teachers and learners themselves, where the key of success in applying blended learning exists. The consultation and consideration before applying blended learning are also significant to the success of it.

CD ANALYSIS 4 (CD Title : SATSSOFT Vocabulary)

This analysis is based on score 1-5. Score 1 is the lowest rank and the score 5 is the highest.

SATSSOFT Vocabulary CD is almost the same with SATSSOFT English Words, but this was programmed for higher levels of English and for older ages of children or more appropriate for teenagers.  There are four kinds of games and twelve levels that students can choose in this program.

A. Interactivity

This CD program is quite interactive as it provides games that enable the users to answer the questions ad to get the results from the program. From the beginning, the users are asked to write their names and ages. And the names and ages will appear on the screen in order to make it more personal. Games with fun music are used as the media of interaction between the users and the program. The users play the games and answer the questions at the same time and the CD program will do the scoring. (Score 4)

B. Usability (flexibility) 

This CD program is very easy to use and it is interesting. As it is provided for children and teenagers (although the ages are not stated), this program can be used for learning, improving and memorizing new vocabulary. This CD is very flexible because the users are able to  switch the games they are playing to other games without finishing them first. Moreover, to make it more flexible, the users are able to stop the games for a moment to find the list of words with their definitions. (Score 4)

C. Content Appropriateness

The CD program does not provide any information about the age of users of the program. However, based on the level of difficulties, it can be concluded that  the program may be best suited for teenagers or those who are studying in high schools. The instructions in the program are not available enough for young learners, however, it may not cause many troubles for older users such as teenagers. (Score 5)

D. Effectiveness

This program will be effective for learning new vocabulary and improving vocabulary knowledge of older children or teenagers. However, the fun games provided in the CD may look like those which are provided for young learners. Some vocabulary repetitions from games to games are effective for those users who may need sometime to remember new vocabulary but they may cause boredom for the fast learners. In term of instructions, this CD program provides well and clear instructions which make it easier to use. (Score 4)

E. Performance

The overall performance of this program is very interesting and attractive. There are  many pictures, fun music and sounds to attract the users while learning and to make learning more fun. (Score 5)

This CD program was set for children aged 3-11. There are four kinds of games and twelve levels that students can choose in this CD program.

A. Interactivity

The games are very interactive.This CD provides games that enable  users to interact with the program. Through the games, for example, users answer some questions by doing the games  and then they can check if the answers are correct or not. Then, If the answers are incorrect, they are not allowed to continue to play the next level of the game. And the end , the users can also print the certificate of performance which mention their grade or level they achieve. (Score 5)

B. Usability

The use of this program is very easy. As it is provided for students aged 3-11, it was made easy and fun. Students can improve vocabulary by  memorizing  words and their meanings.  Flexibility becomes a very good point for this CD program, because the users are able to move from a game to another game without finishing the first one. The users can switch to other games or  to get some help of the definitions of  words from the help menu. (Score 4)

C. Content Appropriateness

This CD program is very well appropriate for the aged 3-11. The levels of vocabulary difficulty were mare vary so that the users are able to improve their vocabulary, as well as memorizing the words and their definitions  by doing the games.  To make it complete, they can test themselves on the target vocabulary on their chosen topic by doing games.  The topics are familiar for children aged 3-11. D. Effectiveness

The program is easy and very appropriate for children and would be very effective for children for practicing and improving their vocabulary.  Perhaps, the CD program needs to be improved on providing more instruction and guidance for the users because the users are children.  (Score 3)

E. Performance

This CD program is very attractive for the young learners.  The moving and colourful pictures in the CD are very interesting and catchy. The CD also provides  interesting music and sounds. The overall performance of this CD is excellent. (Score 5)

a. Interactivity

The CD is very interactive. It provides interaction from the speaker in the CD with the CD users. For example : Hear the word, then record our own voice and compare the two. This activity enable learners to interact with the speakers in the CD program. Playing interactive language games to feed the learners new words, along with pictures to reinforce learners’ memory. It then tests your knowledge with fun quizzes. As soon as we start playing we start learning. (score 5)

b. Usability (flexibility)

This CD is very easy to use and it is flexible. There is not any complicated instruction.  The CD includes some games, and the learners will hear essential phrases and see how they are written before playing a game. All of the usability and flexibility are excellent. (Score 5)

c. Content appropriateness
