This analysis is based on score 1-5. Score 1 is the lowest rank and the score 5 is the highest.

a. Interactivity

The CD is very interactive. It provides interaction from the speaker in the CD with the CD users. For example : the speaker in     the CD asks a question and the user answers it and the answer is recorded in order to get the score. (score 5)

b. Usability (flexibility)

The program provides easy program navigation. It enables learners to operate it  without any confusions. (score 5)

c. Content appropriateness

The content, even though it is probably only suitable for beginner levels, but the lessons are useful and  related to life skills (speaking). The materials in the CD are represented with categories which enable students to choose any kind of situations in which they want to practice at. Good for beginner to intermediate levels.( score 4)

d. Effectiveness

It is good and effective enough in accommodating students’ learning to promote improvements in speaking. (score 4)

e. Performance (attractiveness)

The presentation, the layout or the screen colour and some illustrations like picture, diagram, charts, etc  are not presented attractively in the CD program. They look too old-fashioned. There should be more enhancement on the performance  and attractiveness. (score 3)

English as Lingua Franca -a round table discussion-

1049280_617397451612371_1159023590_o

I attended this seminar last Monday. Charles Hall from The University of Memphis with  AMINEF presented this round table discussion which was very informative and interesting. The topic is  “English as Lingua Franca” means that English for everybody.  English is seen as everybody’s language rather than the domination of native speakers. Knowing that not all native speakers are expert users of English was the rationale of   the exchange of terms from native speaker into the terms “expert users” and “non-expert users” of English. Bothering no more about the pronunciation, dialect or accent, the intelligibility becomes the only matter. As long as it’s understood than communication happens.

It’s certainly a breakthrough for teachers in Indonesia.

Native Speaker Visits in My Class

Native Speaker in my Class                    Native 2011 1

These pics are some of native speakers visits I have in my class. We have them every 3 months. Native speakers are not only “bule (foreigners with blue eyes and blond hair)” who come to my class to speak English, but they come with knowledge that they bring from their home countries. They share cross cultural values and new horizons for my students. My students are always interested to have the native visits in my class.
